The real dangers of GMOs

written by Pierric Lamat the 20th of November

ffff

Most of peoples thinks GMOs are dangerous for the health. That not really true, in fact the real problems of GMOs themselves, it’s how people use it.

What disgusts people white GMO sis the genetical aspect. When you  talk about genetic, people think immediately about genetic transformation, like in movies. In really this aspect of GMOs (the genetical aspects) is totally safe, you will not get a cancer or anything else just because the apple you have eaten is an GMO apple. In this article i will explain you what the 3 real dangers of GMOs are.

Most of genetically modification to plants (92%) are about make plants products them owns natural pesticide. This natural pesticide evaporates in few hours, and it’s not harmful to humans.

But the secondary effect of this genetical modification is that the plants become resistant to chemical pesticides. Because of that the plants that should have died because they received too many  pesticides (chemical one) survive and store this pesticide in their cells. And this ( chemical) pesticide in high concentration, is very dangerous for human health ( that one of the primary reason why people gets cancer ).

Another problem of GMO sis the fact that GMOs plants product bigger fruits/vegetables than regular plants, but for product bigger fruits, the plant must drain more minerals from the ground. It aggravates the soil depletion phenomenon and the over-exploitation of grounds.

Soil depletion is an real problem and must be seriously considered. Because if we continue as we do now, in few years most of the farmland will become non-arable.

Each year, farmer who product GMOs must buy new GMOs crops, and this is very expensive ( that one of the primary reason why many farmers don’t product GMOs). The negative point is that the company who sell these crops are also the company who sell chemical pesticide (dangerous for health), for example, the very controverted company Monsanto. So, when a farmer wants to use less pesticide to not contaminate  the grounds, he gives money to people who produce toxic pesticide.

GMOs : the Indian Case

By Pierric Lamat, november 25, 2018

Back in the 80’s, the Indian Government, following the advice of the IMF, has promoted the us GMOs. Thousands of farmers have abandoned their traditional seeds for GMOs seeds provided by international company like Monsanto. At that time, the farmers accepted to buy new seeds that 10 times more expansive. They took that decision because they were told that those GMOs seeds were resistant to insects and other parasites. They thought they would not have to buy pesticides. The farmers had to take heavy loans to move to those GMOs.

But the resellers of those magical seeds forgot to tell the farmers that the GMOs plants was in fact not resistant to local Indian insects and diseases. That was the first deception as farmers had to buy pesticides, but they could not, and the harvest was very small. The second negative effects that was not mentioned at that time, is that those plants neds 2 times more water than traditional ones. As a consequence, the soils get depleted. This has impacted the harvest of the following years as it was a lot reduced compared to what they could expect.

The worst of it, is that the farmers had to buy new seeds from Monsanto, because the GMOs seeds has been modified in such a way that they cannot reproduce themselves. This geneticaf technology was called « Terminator ».

After this first terrible year, the farmers were in some very critical financial situations with arrimportant  debts and no revenues. Most of ths failed to recover from this situation and after few years become deeply depressed. Between the years 1993 and 2006, it-is more than 150,000 indian farmers who committed suicide.

The farmers and the Indian government have been abused by international seeds company that have selfthem GMOs not adapted for their country.

Cannabis, a plant that makes debate…

An article by Lucas Menny, November 27th 2018

What is cannabis?

Cannabis is a plant used to produce narcotics. It comes in two forms: grass, « weed » and resin, « shit », sold in bars or « bread » of several tens of grams. The active ingredient in cannabis is called THC(tetrahydrocannabinol). Generally it is between 8 and 10%.

Cannabis a plant still poorly known….

Scientists are now focusing more on cannabis. These are difficult studies to conduct because of required authorizations from states. The laboratories that conduct these studies are highly controlled and under high security. This regulatory burden discourages many researchers. In addition, cannabis is a complex plant. It contains hundreds of components whose effects are not well known. Scientists focus their research on two specific components: the active ingredient of the plant (THC), and cannabidiol (CBD). The purpose of these studies is to know better this plant which is consumed everywhere in the world.

Cannabis good or bad for my health?

fff

Some experts advocate the use of cannabis to treat some diseases, for example hyperactivity or epilepsy. The results of the research indicate that some people with chronic pain practice self-medication with cannabis. Experts argue that we can use the effects of cannabis as a cure. For example, one of the characteristics of cannabis is to provide a feeling of hunger, this can be useful for increasing appetite and preventing muscle loss in people with cancer or AIDS. Even though cannabis seems to be a miracle cure the reality is a bit more complex. Regular cannabis use can cause significant side effects. For example, it creates a dependency, a withdrawal. Moreover, inhaled cannabis smoke has much higher carcinogenic potency than those of tobacco (more than ten times more). In the end, cannabis is a poorly known plant that has not revealed all its secrets.

American football: « A danger for our brain …!”

Article written by Lucas Menny, November 20th, 2018

A sport of rare violence

American football is a very popular sport in the United States. In this sport contact between the players are very frequent. Furthermore players are equipped with armor and a helmet, which makes every contact very violent.

Physical and mental aftermath

Players who have practiced this sport for many years are very often victims of physical degeneration. The many shocks received by the player are the cause of many trauma. Many inquiries were made with American football ex pros players. Nearly nine out of ten former players suffer from daily pain. And most of them believe that American football is the cause. 90% of the players that were interviewed said to have had one or more serious concussions. Recently Boston University has done a study on the brains of 35 pros players. Of these 35 brains, 34 have Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). It is a cerebral degeneration related to concussions.

The NFL, a very powerful lobby

The NFL refuses to recognize work-related injuries. Ex-players who have suffered these trauma feel like they have hit a wall. Hospital costs are very high in the United States due to expensive health insurance. Medicare only works for people over 65, and the NFL’s health insurance lasts only five years after the last game played. Around 10% of ex-players can not pay for their care. Nearly 4000 ex pros players have filed suit against the NFL. They accuse the NFL of minimizing the risk of concussions and not feeling enough to help.

A public case

The NFL spent 100 million dollars on medical research and upgrading the players’ helmets. But this remains insufficient. The movie « Alone against All » with Will Smith denounces the lack of involvement of the NFL. In “year” Barack Obama entered the debate. He says that American football has some changes to make.

Lead printing on glass kills!

By Nicolas Bécuwe What the Health, November 20, 2018

Recent tests proved the presence of lead in some glass printings. And some studies proved the daily absorption of these substance leads to very serious consequences such as brain and lung damage.

As the World Health Organization warns us, lead is a cumulative toxicant that affects multiple body systems and is particularly harmful to young children. Lead in the body is distributed to the brain, liver, kidney and bones. It is stored in the teeth and bones, where it accumulates over time. Lead in bone is released into blood during pregnancy and becomes a source of exposure to the developing foetus. But most important to notify, there is no known level of lead exposure that is considered safe!

Researchers at the University of Plymouth found lead on 139 glasses out of 197, or 70 percent of drinking glasses. The presence of lead comes from his frequent uses during the manufacturing process. In fact lead is used to colour glass printing. That’s surprising because there are organic inks that do not use metallic pigments, normally used in glassware because they are less toxic and more respectful of the environment. Theses awful glasses are everywhere, sold by many international brands such as Mc Donalds and the Coca Cola Company.

So, by exposing you every day, even to small content of lead, you risk many serious diseases or adverse events (muscle pains, nausea, coma, loss of appetite, poor school performance, poor coordination, lack of energy) and that’s very dangerous especially for children.

To finish, I recommend all my readers to verify every single glass you have at home and pay attention next time you’ll buy another.

Air Fresheners, useful but dangerous?

By Nicolas Bécuwe What the Health, november 29, 2018

Air freshening products are everywhere, in our offices, hotels, washrooms, cars and homes, because of their utility of hiding bad smells. Air fresheners have many benefits both for consumers and business owners. According to Mr Paul Wonnacott, a former member of the Council of Economic Advisers (CEO), “The appropriate background scent in a store can subtly trigger consumers to spend more time in there or persuade them to stop in”. But is it always a good thing? 1 American out of 3 claims to have experienced health problems when exposed to fragranced products such as air fresheners. So we investigate on air fresheners and their potential effects on our health.

 sprays

When we look at the components of air fresheners we can see that it may contains any number of dangerous chemicals.

Such as formaldehyde, a colorless, flammable, strong-smelling chemical commonly used as an industrial fungicide, germicide, and disinfectant, and as a preservative in mortuaries and medical laboratories. Formaldehyde also occurs naturally in the environment. It is produced in small amounts by most living organisms as part of normal metabolic processes. Some individuals may experience adverse effects such as watery eyes; burning sensations in the eyes, nose, and throat; coughing; wheezing; nausea; and skin irritation due to the presence of this chemical. Laboratory studies showed that exposure to formaldehyde could cause nasal cancer in rats and could also cause cancer in humans according to The National Cancer Institute (NCI). And recently The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies formaldehyde as a human carcinogen.

It may contain petroleum distillates a flammable, colorless liquid. That causes irritation of eyes, skin, nose and throat; dizziness; drowsiness; headache; nausea and chemical pneumonitis according to The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

Research found that no air fresheners were made without these toxic components, so nowadays, the safest way to avoid bad smells is to open windows to bring fresh air or to use fans to maintain air circulation.

Blue light is killing our sleep and our eyes

written by Alexandre Abadie, the 21st of November

All around the world, blue light destroys people view because every day and every night, these people are using their phone, computers or televisions.

Ophthalmologists have warned us against the potentially damaging effect of this part of the light spectrum on the retina, while its disruptive effect on the circadian rhythm in the event of nocturnal exposure is generally accepted.

The deregulation of the sleep cycle

bl1

Blue light disturbs our sleep and can excite us. That is a problem. This is how the smartphones and other consoles create their own pollution! The blue light is poisonous for children and everyone who cannot have protection. But this problem could be fixed if these screens are not used at a late hour in the evening.

bl2

The destruction of our eyes

We can find blue light in screen and at the top of cars, which is created by LEAD. It allows to consume less battery. But the point is that our eyes are vulnerable to this light. We have many cases of people who wear glasses because they used too much their phone without protection!

The only way to stop this degradation of our eyes and our sleep is to stop using our phones, to go to bed earlier. Parents must be careful of their children to protect them. Besides, the use of our phones or computers can be time consuming and reduce our social lives

Do the electric car is better for the health and the environment than the thermal car?

written by Alexandre Abadie, the 21st of November

In the beginning of the XXI century, the electric car become important in many countries because of its low consummation of CO2. Besides, this car has an electric motor, which product less sound than a thermal car. But are these two particularities good for people health?

Contrary to what most people believe, the electric car is no more virtuous for the climate than the thermal car, petrol or diesel.

According to an ancient Study the manufacture of the batteries is so CO-emitting2 must have travelled from 50 000 to 100 000 km in Electric car to achieve a consumption equivalent with a thermal car (15 to 30 km per day, 365 days a year, for 10 years). These batteries aren’t product CO2 directly, but their production does the same effect.

And even if we just look the consuming of electricity, we can see that electricity is made by nuclear central is the most ways. This production of electricity is another aspect of pollution by car.

This pollution disturbs the ecology and people’s health.

Sans titre

Furthermore, the electric car has the particularity of producing less sound than thermal car, but it is not only an advantage. During many years, people could care about car on proximity thanks to their sound but now, how can we hear them come without this sound? The human reflex is built on two senses: the view and the sound. Now, the electric car takes off one of these two senses.

To conclude, we can see that electric cars have their own way to polluting and produce less sound which could be bad for our reflexes. So we can ask: How can we decrease this emission of CO2 in the atmosphere and how can we see them coming without their sound?
